Scientist/Engineer, Chemistry

The Opportunity

Arsenal Medical is a medical device company that is developing innovative, first-in-class medical products. We are a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers, working in close collaboration to understand the biology of disease, and to create solutions that address some of today’s most challenging and critical medical needs.

Arsenal Medical currently has an opening for a motivated scientist or engineer with experience in polymer chemistry and material science to join our team. This position will support a project developing a novel in-situ forming medical device for a vascular application.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers to develop formulations
  • Identify and develop characterization methods enabling lead materials selection
  • Synthesize, purify and characterize monomers / polymers for formulation development
  • Transfer synthetic processes and analytical methods to external vendors, contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) or contract research organizations (CROs)
  • Properly document synthetic procedures, experimental designs and results in a laboratory notebook and present experiment outcomes at meetings
  • Draft technical reports, test methods, work instructions and standard operating procedures

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science or related discipline with 2 to 4 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated track record of performing chemical synthesis and formulation development
  • Ability to work independently, design experiments, interpret results and identify next-steps
  • Capacity to work in cross functional teams
  • Hands on experience with analytical chemistry techniques, including the characterization of polymeric material is preferred: NMR, GPC, DSC, FTIR, SEM, HPLC, MS, KF, viscometry, rheology, titrations, UV/fluorescence assays, and Instron testing
  • Experience coordinating the scale-up and manufacture of custom chemicals with contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs)
  • Experience coordinating the transfer of analytical methods to with contract research organizations (CROs) and contract laboratories
  • Knowledge of GMP and GLP practices for chemical manufacturing and analytical methods including process or method development, verification and validation
  • Proven problem-solving skills to overcoming technical challenges
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools, such as Excel and Minitab
  • Prior experience in the medical device or pharmaceutical industries is considered a strong plus
  • A proven ability to be detail oriented and organized
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, medical device start-up
